Used vs. new PC parts: where the value actually is

The one-sentence version

Parts with no moving parts and no wear mechanism are outstanding used; parts that wear, hold your data, or protect everything else deserve more caution. Price the risk part by part and a used build routinely costs a large chunk less than the same performance new.

Great used: CPUs

A CPU is the safest used purchase in computing. No moving parts, no meaningful wear at normal use — a processor either works or it doesn't, and one that works has decades of silicon life in it. Used CPUs a generation or two old are where the best price-to-performance in PC building hides. The main things to get right are the socket matching your motherboard and the price matching the market.

Great used, with homework: GPUs

The biggest savings in absolute dollars, and the one category where the seller's testing genuinely matters. Fans wear, thermal paste dries, and problems only show under load — so buy tested, from someone with a return policy, and stress it yourself the day it arrives. Good used: RAM, cases, air coolers, motherboards

• RAM has no wear mechanism to speak of; a stick that passes a memory test is as good as new. Match the generation and speed to your board and pocket the difference.
• Cases are metal boxes. A used case with intact standoffs and front-panel wiring is the easiest money you'll ever save — cosmetics are the only real variable.
• Air coolers are similarly hard to kill; a new fan is cheap even if the old one is tired.
• Motherboards are fine used with one caveat: they're the fiddliest part to diagnose when something's wrong (bent pins, dead slots, flaky ports), so the seller's testing and return policy do more work here. Ours are POST-tested with slots and ports checked before listing.

Think twice used: storage and power supplies

• SSDs and hard drives wear. Flash cells have finite write cycles and drive motors have finite hours — a used drive is fine if the seller shows its health data (SMART status, percentage used), and a gamble if they don't. We list drive health on every used drive we sell; treat any listing that won't as priced-for-risk.
• Power supplies age — capacitors degrade with heat and years, and the PSU is the one part that can take everything else with it when it fails badly. A lightly-used quality unit from a seller who tested it under load is reasonable; a mystery PSU at any price is not. When in doubt, this is the slot where buying new (or new-ish with warranty) buys the most peace of mind per dollar.

The used market has real, checkable prices — the mistake is anchoring to what the part cost new. A deal is a price below that line from a seller who tested the part — not a big percentage off a number from three years ago.
